Natural Gas
Mains gas (natural gas) is piped directly into most homes in the UK, unlike liquid petroleum gas (LPG) which needs to be stored in tanks. This means that most homes have heating and hot water provided by a natural, or mains, gas boiler.
What is a natural gas boiler?
A gas-fired boiler provides hot water to taps throughout the home and also to radiators in the central heating system. Gas is an extremely efficient fuel and modern condensing boilers have large heat exchangers that collect and use almost all the heat created when the gas burns for heating and hot water, making the boilers 90% or more efficient.
There are three main types of gas boiler: heat only, system and combi. They all come in different sizes, also known as outputs. Your Gas Safe registered heating engineer will survey your property and help you decide which type and output of boiler will best suit you and your family’s heating and hot water needs.
The output of the boiler is measured in kilowatts (kW), and it is important to get the right output for the number of radiators, bathrooms and people in the home. If the boiler is too small, it won’t heat your home adequately or produce enough hot water. If the boiler is too big, it will burn more gas, making your energy bills more expensive and your carbon emissions higher than they need to be.
