What is Net zero carbon?

Net zero carbon is when the amount of carbon dioxide we add to the atmosphere is the same or less than as the amount taken out of the atmosphere.  Achieving net zero carbon by 2050 is a legal target for the UK.

How will net zero carbon be achieved?

Heating our homes using natural gas contributes substantially to the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. We need to change the way we heat our buildings and use alternative options, such as electric boilers, heat pumps, heat networks and, in the future, hydrogen boilers.

Carbon emissions from, for example, transport, agriculture, and industry will also need to be cut.  Technologies such as carbon capture and storage, and the way we use our land – such as planting more trees – will need to be increased to help remove carbon from the atmosphere.
